INSIGHT: Cable migration to IP Long time talked about, especially in US, where it started with IP Multicast, then failed. It is starting with the long tail/low viewership channels but this move from RF to IP is real. And practically it is allowing more bandwidth for IP data on legacy HFC.

AMS-IX achieved a significant milestone, setting a new internet traffic record of 13 Tbps on 17 September, around 22:30 CET, when traditionally many people are at home streaming, studying or gaming. This peak reflects the growing digitalization of the global economy and the increasing reliance on internet connectivity for work, education, and entertainment. In 2023, the new Dutch audio currency Nationaal Media Onderzoek (NMO) Listening was introduced to the market. This represented a big change in methodology from e-diary to passive electronic measurement using the MediaCell+ app on a smartphone. It brought more granular weekly data, which prompted agencies and advertisers to invest more in radio (+9% in 2023). In 2024, NMO took the next step in further developing the audio currency, and watermarking technology was added to audio-matching in the official audio figures. This ‘best of both worlds’ solution provides stakeholders with detailed (passive-measurement-driven) insight in consumption by platform, allowing accurate measurement of listeners’ transition from FM to DAB/IP. In addition, watermarking helped to remove all ambiguity around simulcast radio/TV broadcasts and has added on average 8% of listening time to what was already captured by audio-matching alone. In their presentation at the 2024 asi International Radio & Audio Conference in Venice, Yvette van den Berg of NMO (Nationaal Media Onderzoek) and Jerôme Schalkwijk Schalkwijk of Ipsos compared the two techniques and showed that combining different measurement technologies delivers the best results for the industry. Yvette and Jerome won this year’s prestigious Tony Twyman Award for best paper at the asi Radio & Audio Conference, kindly sponsored by dataBreeders. Dutch viewing patterns - do they point to a big shift? "For the first time, Dutch viewers spent more time watching streaming services than live TV for the first time. In Q1 streaming made up 25% of average daily viewing time compared to 21% for linear TV." It's been a long time in the making, we've all heard about the growth of streaming platforms, and when they would supposedly take the lead from the #lineartv platforms. With the increases in pricing, it seems that streaming had slowed, and the fact that in Europe, there is a big offering of free-to-air #traditionaltv #fta it seemed there was still a way to go. It's early days, and the Dutch results show a slight increase for Q1 of 2024, so it may yet fall back. However, it shows that even with the strength of the #fta market, streaming's rise is unstoppable. "Young people spent the least time on live time, at just 15% for the 25-35 age group, compared to almost 40 percent for 55-80 year-olds. The 25-35 age group spends twice as much time on streaming services, while the youngest group, aged 16-25, spends the most time on online content, at over an hour a day." However, at some point we'll have to look at the distinctions of #television to better understand it. Just because traditional linear i.e. through DTT, cable and satellite may be in decline, it doesn't mean that linear itself is in decline. People may instead stream #content even live channels, rather than watching them through traditional linear means. This is a big distinction that the reports sometimes don't highlight. This report below talks about how, after Netflix, the private company RTL Videoland has a 20% share of the #streaming market, and on their platform people may be viewing live channels. So definitions of media need to be clearer to understand what the trends are, and what people are watching, rather than how its being consumed. For example, I think in Europe, public service media will still have a big role to play in television going forward, but how they are consumed will change. However, if their audiences stay the same/grow on a new platform, that should be reflected, rather than being grouped as traditional tv, and seen as in terminal decline. Viewing habits will change, but public service media will adapt, as has happened with all the key #psms and and they will be part of the trend. It starts. Ziggo is yet another platform operator that has moved its primary service to pure IP. The question that every single broadcast/traditional TV platform should be asking themselves is ... why have we not started the transition? On the other side, investment in broadcast platforms should be questioned because this transition will be characterised by major inflexion points as consumers find the consumption via IP to be easier, particularly as this is a consumer led transition.

D2X is a New Multicast Broadcast RAN Aligned with 5G NR for future Interworking https://lnkd.in/eUgyWWA2 D2X OFDM Frames are based on Resource Block (RB) of (24) Sub-carriers in Frequency and supports Bandwidths shown table below. The (24) is LCM of 3, 4, 6, 8, 12 the spacing frequency of the (5) scatter pilot patterns selectable. For the best spectrum Efficiency and Economics, a 24 MHz D2X Carrier shown table is shared by Broadcast Virtual Network Operators (BVNO). This could be comprised of (4) 6 MHz or (3) 8 MHz continuous broadcast carriers. With D2X Baseband CU/DU in Cloud and sent to Shared RU and antennas at transmitter / cell sites makes economics for operators attractive. A D2X 24 MHz UE will work on a global scale. Just as a 20MHz LTE UE was successfully deployed by MNO using (5, 10, 15, 20) MHz carriers. The graphic below shows 24 MHz D2X UE and support for reduce service capable IoT, Wearable with extended battery requirements. The D2X thesis is such a Multicast Broadcast RAN harmonized with 5G NR (MBS) with diverse Single Frequency Network Topologies D2X which could overlay and interwork offload 5G traffic or complement with converged services in future. D2X is currently being considered (Studied) by ATSC standard organization https://www.atsc.org/ and interested 5G MNO and or 5G Vendors are welcome to give input to consider feasibility for broadcast and or IMT bands. D2X is designed using O-RAN cloud-native principles. The Terrestrial Broadcast RAN architecture has not changed in 75 years until emergence of O-RAN.
